Remember the first three words are WE THE PEOPLE.….
It is important to remember exactly why this nation is the freest nation in the history of humankind:
No establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
Freedom of speech;
Freedom of the press;
Freedom to peaceably assemble;
Freedom to petition the government for redress of grievances;
Right to bear arms;
No soldier quartered in time of peace or war;
Right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures (showing of probable cause);
No double jeopardy;
Persons have right to not be a witness against themselves;
Right to a speedy and public trial;
Right to jury trial;
Right to confront witness:
Right to counsel;
Excessive bail shall not be required;
The rights not delegated to the federal government are left up to the States and the People;
Slavery is abolished;
All persons born or naturalized in the United States are citizens and no state can take that away;
The right of any citizen to vote shall not be abridged or denied by the USA or any state based upon race, color or previous condition of servitude-Congress has legislative authority to enforce this provision;
Women have the right to vote;
Presidents limited to two-terms in office (no Kings allowed);
Illegality of poll tax;
18-year-olds have the right to vote (if you are old enough to die for this country you are old enough to vote about the beginning of that war);
Equal protection and the fact that the majority population cannot by law or referendum deny life, liberty and happiness to those in the minority whether because of race, religion, ethnicity, creed, gender or disability (visible or invisible).
If you didn’t realize that all of these rights flow from the Constitution of the United States and her amendments, it’s time to reread that document.
You might also realize that the power to levy income taxes was not listed as to what makes this a great nation. Too often, as we have recently seen in the IRS scandal, the power to tax is the power to destroy.
While acknowledging that the government needs to be funded, the issue isn’t that people don’t pay enough in tax, or that those of us demanding an accounting from government aren’t patriotic. The issue is, what does the federal and state governments do with our hard-earned money?
We, the citizens of the United States pay tax out of love of country, not so bureaucrats can party on….
We, the citizens of the United States, pay our taxes to help our fellow citizens in time of need, not so an imperial-President can spend over one billion dollars of our money in one year alone on selfish extravagances…
We, the citizens of the United States, pay our taxes so that those who have sacrificed for this nation, our Veterans, should be provided appropriate and affordable healthcare, descent jobs, and even housing if necessary, not so Congresspeople can live “high on the hog” on our dime.
Think about this conundrum this Constitution Day…..(1) what is truly the important aspects of our nation and (2) who of the political class actually needs to be replaced by those that respect We The People and the US Constitution.
